MI New York defeated Washington Freedom by 5 runs in a thrilling final to win their second title in the 2025 season. They’re one of the top favorites to win again this season having acquired the talents of Corbin Bosch and Allah Ghazanfar while also retaining their core roster. Nicholas Pooran, who was integral to their success last season, will captain the team as they seek to defend their title in 2026.
However, it’s worth pointing out that despite the fact that MI New York are the current champions, they started last season very poorly and only just made the playoffs. They were also reliant on key performers such as Monank Patel. If these suffer a poor run of form, they could struggle.

Washington Freedom - 2025 finalists with unfinished business
Washington Freedom were narrowly beaten by just 5 runs in the last over of the 2025 final. The 2024 champions will feel like they have unfinished business from the Washington Freedom vs MI New York match and are definitely one to watch this season. They retained 17 players from their 2025 roster, while adding Ben Dwarshuis and Nikhil Chaudary. Aside from Justin Dill, Washington Freedom also kept its domestic roster from the title-winning 2024 season. This could be a major factor in their success this season, with Dwarshuis having an excellent record in the IPL.
San Francisco Unicorns and LA Knight Riders as playoff contenders
The San Francisco Unicorns had a strong showing in the round-robin phase of last season, finishing ahead of the eventual champions MI New York. However, they were defeated in the eliminator match of the playoffs. This year they’ll be keen to improve and have made major changes to their roster. This includes the addition of Ravichandran Ashwin, who makes history as the first India-capped player to feature in the MLC. Ashwin is one of the most prolific spin bowlers of all time and can potentially help the Unicorns reach the playoffs.
While the LA Knight Riders won just 2 matches last season, they could challenge for the playoffs this season after changing their head coach to former West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo, and bringing in some key players. Meanwhile, Carmi Le Roux, Nitish Kumar, Kristopher Ramsaran and Jahmar Hamilton were brought in during the draft. We’re predicting Texas Super Kings and Washington Freedom to make the qualifier match of the playoffs, much like last season. However, this season we think the Super Kings will win and reach the final, while Washington Freedom will enter the challenger match.
In the eliminator match, we’re predicting MI New York to beat LA Knight Riders, with MI New York winning the challenger match against Washington Freedom.
